Many people do not know the origins of dressage. It is a French term but the skills date back to the times of knights on horseback and the developments of their riding skills for battle.
The horses they used were heavier than those used in dressage competitions today. They had to be because the weights they carried were considerable. A man dressed in metallic armor was not well placed for the finer arts of riding and so his communication with his steed had to be both minute and precise. And so the skill of dressage was born whereby the rider was able to make his horse do great feats with very little outward signs from the horseman.
When you think about it, a horse had to be able to turn quickly and respond immediately if his rider was not going to be disadvantaged and vulnerable in battle. Once a military charge had degenerated into one-on-one fighting it was invariably the better horseman who came out on top.
Dressage today has its own saddles and uniform. It is all very smart and very competitive. But without really understanding where the sport came from, something is removed from the fullness of enjoying it. Men have always been ingenious in finding ways to better their skills which are also fun, and dressage saddles today contribute to that in no small measure.
Below we have a catalog of dressage saddles and other equipment which are readily available for buy now. We hope you enjoy what is there and are quickly able to find what you want.

The development of saddles for animals over the centuries is fascinating. Most cultures have found a way to cover an animals back to make riding it more comfortable. Bareback riding has its place but it is most certainly not for the long-term or for pleasure riding. Not for most people anyway! Of course if you are into bronco and rodeo riding then this will be your daily bread and butter.
Saddles for horses are generally made of leather although some other materials are also used today. We tend to think of sitting astride a horse but for centuries women in particular rode side saddle. This of course was to preserve their modesty but nowadays they are much heartier. Nevertheless, riding side saddle is a skill and not as easy as many may think.
People will always be looking to develop the art of saddle making and to stretch to the limits the advantages of one type over another. A racing saddle for example is barely more than a postage stamp on the back of the horse and is only their to give the jockey some help as he guides and drives a horse around a track. The stirrups have to hang from somewhere. But the saddle and irons are an overall part of the weight assigned for the horse to carry and so the design and weight are of great significance to both rider and trainer and owner.
Enough digression! On the attached pages we have brought you a choice of types of saddles which we hope will help you in your search.
