English Saddles
English saddles and jumping saddles in high grade leather can be seen in our online catalog below
The centuries old craft of saddle making is borne out of a need for both horse and rider to be as comfortable as possible while working together. The horse is a trusty animal and the rider should want its greatest comfort. To this end English saddles are designed to meet the needs of both.
Saddles are made of both rigid and flexible material, typically wood, foam, polystyrene and leather. Although the materials are commonplace, there is great skill required in their construction. If the saddle is going to be made for a particular horse then the worker must be able to translate the horses needs to the workbench. Similarly he or she must be able to fashion the saddle to suit a particular rider although the former is more important.
Special tools are used in saddle making and whale bone is used to fashion the leather as it is strong and will not scratch the leather. Foam is used for comfort and support and it is added in layers to increase the softness of the ride. All exterior surfaces are sculpted and shaved do that they are protected from excessive wear and catching and increase the comfort of both horse and rider. The layers are built up and then both glued and stitched together.
Wool is stuffed into the underside of the saddle and this is to fashion the saddle to the hoses back. Clearly wearing a saddle must not harm the horse in any way and the English saddle is particularly designed for maximum ease of movement. The end product is a beautiful creation and something wonderful to behold and to own.

The development of saddles for animals over the centuries is fascinating. Most cultures have found a way to cover an animals back to make riding it more comfortable. Bareback riding has its place but it is most certainly not for the long-term or for pleasure riding. Not for most people anyway! Of course if you are into bronco and rodeo riding then this will be your daily bread and butter.
Saddles for horses are generally made of leather although some other materials are also used today. We tend to think of sitting astride a horse but for centuries women in particular rode side saddle. This of course was to preserve their modesty but nowadays they are much heartier. Nevertheless, riding side saddle is a skill and not as easy as many may think.
People will always be looking to develop the art of saddle making and to stretch to the limits the advantages of one type over another. A racing saddle for example is barely more than a postage stamp on the back of the horse and is only their to give the jockey some help as he guides and drives a horse around a track. The stirrups have to hang from somewhere. But the saddle and irons are an overall part of the weight assigned for the horse to carry and so the design and weight are of great significance to both rider and trainer and owner.
Enough digression! On the attached pages we have brought you a choice of types of saddles which we hope will help you in your search.
